Which Chocolate Melts The Fastest And Why Dark Milk Or White Chocolate

From WikiLab
Jump to: navigation, search

Which chocolate melts the fastest? Is it dark, milk or white? There are a number of ways to test this, and if you are a chocoholic you will thoroughly enjoy one in particular.

Which one do you think it is and why?

The melting point of chocolate can be affected by many things including the quality of the cocoa bean, how it was processed, how the chocolate was tempered and even the particular ingredients used to produce it.

What Is Chocolate?
Chocolate, in its true form, comes from the cocoa bean. The cocoa bean comes from the cocoa tree, which bears fruits called cocoa pods, three or four times a year. Shaped like a cucumber, the cocoa pod is hard and coarse, and changes in color from green to brown as it matures.

The cocoa pod can contain 40 kernels, called cocoa beans. Once removed from the pod, along with the pulp, they are put through a long and complicated process including fermentation, dehydration and roasting, and are finally ground into cocoa powder.

Cocoa powder is the essential ingredient of chocolate.

Dark Chocolate
Chocolate has health benefits. The darker it is, the healthier it is.

Benefits include helping with weight loss, decreasing blood pressure and improving insulin sensitivity, just to name a few.

It is also a wonderful antioxidant. So a bit of dark chocolate every now and then in your diet is a good thing.

The darker it is, the more bitter it tastes. This is because dark chocolate contains 60-70% cocoa, and less sugar, milk products, and other additives than lighter chocolates do. Dark chocolate also contains cocoa liquor and cocoa butter, but again, less than its cousins do.

Milk Chocolate
Milk chocolate, made ever so famous by Cadbury, typically contains around 50% cocoa, much less than dark chocolate does. Milk chocolate is sweeter than dark chocolate because of the larger volume of other ingredients added in, such as full-cream milk and sugar.

Due to these additions, the health benefits of milk chocolate are almost not worth mentioning, as any benefits would be undermined by the sugar content.

White Chocolate
White chocolate really is not chocolate at all. It is a product made of cocoa butter, milk and sugar and contains little or no cocoa solids. It has a flavor very similar to condensed milk due to its high sugar content.

Which Chocolate Melts the Fastest?
(Drum roll...)

Dark chocolate melts the fastest.

The main reason is that dark chocolate is in a more natural state. Adding milk, sugar, fats and other ingredients slows its melting because these ingredients have different melting points.

Experiment at Home
If you want, try the experiment at home: in the microwave, over a double boiler, or on the stove using a hot plate. For consistency, break off the same number of pieces of each type, preferably of the same brand.

Almost immediately you will notice the chocolate start to sweat.

The dark chocolate will break down fastest, almost to a pool of chocolate, whilst the white chocolate will hold its form longest.

Chocolate Melting Demonstration

Dark Chocolate Facial Mask
If you are wanting to put this new information to good use, regarding the health benefits and fast-melting nature of dark chocolate, you can make yourself a [ ].

You will need:

1 bar dark chocolate
3 tablespoons salt
1 cup milk

Mix the milk and salt together in a small bowl and stir until the salt dissolves. Set aside.

On a double boiler on the stove, melt the chocolate completely and remove from the heat.

Mix the salty milk mixture into the chocolate, let it cool to room temperature, and then lather your face with this mixture. Keep it on for no more than 15 minutes, then wash off with a mild cleanser.

You could lick it off but it may be a bit too salty.

Just Remember
Chocolate is poisonous to animals, so take care at all times when handling or eating chocolate if your family pets are around.

Why Does Chocolate Melt in Your Mouth?
Simply because it has a melting point close to 37 degrees C which is our body temperature.

More Fun Experiments
So now that you know that dark chocolate melts faster than milk chocolate, which melts faster than white chocolate, what can we do with this information?

Well if you are a chocoholic, this is key information at any time of the day.

Are you wanting to dip some strawberries in melted chocolate? Are you wanting to drizzle melted chocolate over an ice-cream sundae? Or are you wanting to have a chocolate fondue? Melted chocolate is certainly "morish." Alternatively, if you are looking to use chocolate in a recipe but need it to hold its form, then milk chocolate will be better than dark.

If you don't believe the facts, why not try it yourself. Experiment at home. Buy blocks of dark, white and milk chocolate, preferably the same brand, break off some squares, and put them in your mouth, one at a time, to see for yourself which one melts fastest. I am sure you will have an enormous amount of fun.

uh actually when I did this experiment the milk chocolate melted fastest and the dark melted the slowest. Ive seen other people do this experiment too and they got the same result as me

okay i see here what you're saying but have you considered how fast it melts in your mouth the answer is dark chocolate it has the thickest coat since it has no added ingredients and the fastest melting is white chocolate since it isn't even chocolate and has a light coat in conclusion chocolate can melt at different speeds depending in their fate take my example put each chocolate in your mouth must be same mass and use a stopwatch to record how fast it melts but you must not suck on it or chew nor anything keep it on your tongue

Think this is entirely based on how you melt it and the ages of the chocolate.
Dark always melts the slowest for me. In a hot car, white and milk are pretty much mush in a few hours while dark still had clumps; all sitting near each other in the exact same conditions. Dark also melts the slowest in my mouth. In fact, it barely melts at all. Milk melts within seconds and white is just the same.

Me and my partner have found out that milk chocolate melts faster when you melt it in a pot with water with also a bole was blocking out the water with the chocolate in the bole, if you get the chance I think you should try it out. We did it for our science fair, it was a lot of fun.

I always thought that it is dark chocolate that melts the fastest maybe because it hasn't got anything else added to it like milk and sugar. It's almost in pure form. And that video proves it. Though it's the "loser" of the three, it's the winner to me.  :)
Thanks for posting. Up and interesting. :)

I always thought it was white chocolate. When That's interesting about the milk slowing melting down; I thought it sped it up. It is strange though. Once I had a pot of milk chocolate and a pot white chocolate sauce for dipping. I put them in the microwave for equal lengths of time, but while the white had fully melted, the milk was still part solid.
Be careful how you phrase what you said about cocoa content in the section about milk chocolate. Milk chocolate can have up to 50% cocoa solids if it is a quality product, but if you read the label on the package of stuff like Dairy Milk, it only has about 24%.
